Prerequisite: An existing background from a Medical Careers -or- Anatomy/Physiology course is highly recommended for supportive knowledge but is not required. An introductory course for students interested in the field of Sports Medicine, covering both academic knowledge and practical skills. It covers the core principles of prevention, recognition, immediate care, and rehabilitation of athletic injuries, along with fundamental nutrition and standards like HIPAA regulations. Students gain practical experience in techniques such as taping, wrapping and joint measurement (goniometry). Classroom learning is enhanced through job shadowing. All job shadow opportunities take place outside of scheduled class time, and students must arrange their own transportation to the sites. The curriculum integrates online modules from the NFHS Learning Center, providing students with an official NFHS certificate of completion which validates the student's training in critical health and safety topics for future coaching, athletic training, or sports-related roles. Successful completion of this course makes students eligible to apply for a potential sports medicine internship. Dual credit through the University of Mary (KIN 151 & 238) or Bismarck State College (HPER 207) is available.
