ELA Strands
(SL) Speaking and Listening
Speaking and Listening Standards
Kindergarten
- ELA-00.SL.01 Participate in collaborative conversations with diverse partners about kindergarten topics and texts with peers and adults in small and larger groups.
- ELA-00.SL.02 Confirm understanding of a text read aloud or information presented orally or through other media by asking and answering questions about key/supporting details and requesting clarification if something is not understood.
- ELA-00.SL.03 Ask and answer questions in order to seek help, get information, or clarify something that is not understood.
First Grade
- ELA-01.SL.01 Participate in collaborative conversations with diverse partners about grade 1 topics and texts with peers and adults in small and larger groups.
- ELA-01.SL.02 Ask and answer questions about key/supporting details in a text read aloud or information presented orally or through other media and requesting clarification if something is not understood.
- ELA-01.SL.03 Ask and answer questions about what a speaker says in order to gather additional information or clarify something that is not understood.
Second Grade
- ELA-02.SL.01 Participate in collaborative conversations with diverse partners about grade 2 topics and texts with peers and adults in small and larger groups.
- ELA-02.SL.02 Recount or describe the main idea and key/supporting details from a text read aloud or information presented orally or through media.
- ELA-02.SL.03 Ask and answer questions about what a speaker says in order to clarify comprehension, gather additional information, or deepen understanding of a topic or issue.
Kindergarten
- ELA-00.SL.04 Describe familiar people, places, things, and events and, with prompting and support, provide additional detail.
- ELA-00.SL.05 Add drawings or other visual displays to descriptions as desired to provide additional detail.
- ELA-00.SL.06 Speak audibly and express thoughts, feelings, and ideas clearly.
First Grade
- ELA-01.SL.04 Describe people, places, things, and events with relevant details, expressing ideas and feelings clearly.
- ELA-01.SL.05 Add drawings or other visual displays to descriptions when appropriate to clarify ideas, thoughts, and feelings.
- ELA-01.SL.06 Speak in complete sentences when appropriate to task and situation.
Second Grade
- ELA-02.SL.04 Tell a story or recount an experience with appropriate facts and relevance, descriptive details, speaking audibly in coherent sentences.
- ELA-02.SL.05 Create audio recordings of stories or poems; add drawings or other visual displays to stories or recounts of experiences when appropriate to clarify ideas, thoughts, and feelings.
- ELA-02.SL.06 Speak in complete sentences when appropriate to task and situation in order to provide requested detail or clarification.
Speaking and Listening Standards
Third Grade
- ELA-03.SL.01 Engage effectively in a range of collaborative discussions, one-on-one, in groups, and teacher-led with diverse partners on grade 3 topics and texts, building on others' ideas and expressing their own clearly.
- ELA-03.SL.02 Determine the main ideas and supporting details of a text read aloud or information presented in diverse media and formats, including visually, quantitatively, and orally.
- ELA-03.SL.03 Ask and answer questions about information from a speaker, offering appropriate elaboration and detail.
Fourth Grade
- ELA-04.SL.01 Engage effectively in a range of collaborative discussions with diverse partners on grade 4 topics and texts, building on others' ideas and expressing their own clearly.
- ELA-04.SL.02 Paraphrase portions of a text read aloud or information presented in diverse media and formats, including visually, quantitatively, and orally.
- ELA-04.SL.03 Identify the reasons and evidence a speaker provides to support particular points.
Fifth Grade
- ELA-05.SL.01 Engage effectively in a range of collaborative discussions with diverse partners on grade 5 topics and texts, building on other' ideas and expressing their own clearly.
- ELA-05.SL.02 Summarize a written text read aloud or information presented in diverse media and formats, including visually, quantitatively, and orally.
- ELA-05.SL.03 Summarize the points a speaker makes and explain how each claim is supported by reasons and evidence.
Third Grade
- ELA-03.SL.04 Report on a topic or text, tell a story, or recount an experience with appropriate facts and relevant, descriptive details, speaking clearly at an understandable pace.
- ELA-03.SL.05 Create engaging audio recordings of stories or poems that demonstrate fluid reading at an understandable pace; add visual displays when appropriate to emphasize or enhance certain facts or details.
- ELA-03.SL.06 Speak in complete sentences when appropriate to task and situation in order to provide requested detail or clarification
Fourth Grade
- ELA-04.SL.04 Report on a topic or text, tell a story, or recount an experience in an organized manner, using appropriate facts and relevant, descriptive details to support main ideas or themes; speak clearly at an understandable pace.
- ELA-04.SL.05 Add audio recordings and visual displays to presentations when appropriate to enhance the development of main ideas or themes.
- ELA-04.SL.06 Differentiate between contexts that call for formal English and situations where informal discourse is appropriate; use formal English when appropriate to task and situation.
Fifth Grade
- ELA-05.SL.04 Report on a topic or text or present an opinion, sequencing ideas logically and using appropriate facts and relevant, descriptive details to support main ideas or themes; speak clearly at an understandable pace.
- ELA-05.SL.05 Include multimedia components and visual displays in presentations when appropriate to enhance the development of main ideas or themes.
- ELA-05.SL.06 Adapt speech to a variety of contexts and tasks, using formal English when appropriate to task and situation.
Speaking and Listening Standards
Sixth Grade
- ELA-06.SL.01 Engage effectively in a range of collaborative discussions (one-on-one, in groups, and teacher-led) with diverse partners on grade 6 topics, texts, and issues, building on others’ ideas and expressing their own clearly.
- ELA-06.SL.02 Use introductory note-taking strategies to interpret information presented in diverse media and formats and explain how it contributes to a topic, text, or issue under study.
- ELA-06.SL.03 Evaluate a speaker’s argument and specific claims, distinguishing claims that are supported by reasons and evidence from claims that are not.
Seventh Grade
- ELA-07.SL.01 Engage effectively in a range of collaborative discussions (one-on-one, in groups, and teacher-led) with diverse partners on grade 7 topics, texts, and issues, building on others’ ideas and expressing their own clearly.
- ELA-07.SL.02 Use introductory note-taking strategies to analyze the main ideas and supporting details presented in diverse media and formats and explain how the ideas clarify a topic, text, or issue under study.
- ELA-07.SL.03 Evaluate a speaker’s argument and specific claims, the soundness of the reasoning, and the relevance and sufficiency of the evidence.
Eighth Grade
- ELA-08.SL.01 Engage effectively in a range of collaborative discussions (one-on-one, in groups, and teacher-led) with diverse partners on grade 8 topics, texts, and issues, building on others’ ideas and expressing their own clearly.
- ELA-08.SL.02 Use effective note-taking strategies to analyze the purpose of information presented in diverse media and formats and evaluate the motives behind its presentation.
- ELA-08.SL.03 Evaluate a speaker’s argument and specific claims, the soundness of the reasoning, the relevance and sufficiency of the evidence, and identify when irrelevant evidence is introduced.
Sixth Grade
- ELA-06.SL.04 Present claims and findings, sequencing ideas logically and using pertinent descriptions, facts, and details to accentuate main ideas or themes; use appropriate eye contact, adequate volume, and clear pronunciation.
- ELA-06.SL.05 Include multimedia components and visual displays in presentations to clarify information.
- ELA-06.SL.06 Adapt speech to a variety of contexts and tasks, demonstrating command of formal English when indicated or appropriate.
Seventh Grade
- ELA-07.SL.04 Present claims and findings, emphasizing significant points in a focused, coherent manner with pertinent descriptions, facts, details, and examples; use appropriate eye contact, adequate volume, and clear pronunciation.
- ELA-07.SL.05 Include multimedia components and visual displays in presentations to clarify claims and findings and emphasize significant points.
- ELA-07.SL.06 Adapt speech to a variety of contexts and tasks, demonstrating command of formal English when indicated or appropriate.
Eighth Grade
- ELA-08.SL.04 Present claims and findings, emphasizing significant points in a focused, coherent manner with relevant evidence, sound valid reasoning, and well-chosen details; use appropriate eye contact, adequate volume, and clear pronunciation.
- ELA-08.SL.05 Integrate multimedia and visual displays into presentations to clarify information, strengthen claims and evidence, and add interest.
- ELA-08.SL.06 Adapt speech to a variety of contexts and tasks, demonstrating command of formal English when indicated or appropriate.
