Different Persuasive Speeches

There are a variety of speeches you will be exposed to as we get used to standing in front of the classroom. We will start out small by analyzing other people's use of persuasion. We will get into groups and analyze commercials for their use of ethos, logos, and pathos. Next, you will give it a try by giving a 60 second speech in which you persuade your audience using those same persuasive traits. I believe it takes small steps to build upon your knowledge of persuasion while also getting you comfortable to speak in front of people a little bit at a time. After your 60 second speech, you will move on to humorous persuasive speech which will last approximately 2 1/2 minutes. Lastly, we will dive into your formal persuasive speech which will be approximately 4-5 minutes. You will feel so accomplished when you are through with this unit!

(2) 60 Second Speech

Assignment:
Pick one item out of the bag, which you will try to “sell” to the class by incorporating Ethos, Pathos, and Logos.

  • You will pick one item out of the bag to sell to the class.
  • You will prepare a 45-60 second speech, the maximum of which can be 1:15.
  • You must have a visual aide
  • Can simply be the object that you are selling,
  • Or you can create an additional visual aide, such as a poster board, video, etc.
  • No one else can be included in your presentation. However, you can pose as a celebrity, athlete, etc.
  • You must appeal to either: Ethos, Pathos, or Logos
  • One of these will be chosen for you
  • You must fill out the worksheet for your advertisement, which will be handed in prior to your speech.
