Analogy Prompt

Summary:

Have students write an analogy prompt such as:
This concept/principle/process is like __________ because __________.

More Information:

Example:

Teacher finishes explaining a concept/principle/process and then asks students to think about what else they have learned in class or experienced in real life that is similar.  The teacher then prompts the students to write an analogy for that concept/principle/process by saying it is like ____________ because ____________.

Ways to Provide and Use Feedback:

Teachers could ask students to share analogies out loud with the class to create a class discussion, or collect them as an exit ticket for the lesson.

Students could share analogies with a partner to get feedback from their peers prior to sharing out loud with the class.

Data Analysis:

These analogies may be used to prompt further discussion of the material or as a signal for the teacher to move forward with the unit.

Opportunities for Student Metacognition:

Asking a student to make an analogy from the material covered in class is a form of self-assessment.  The teacher may assist struggling students on a 1:1 basis or work in pairs to obtain help/clarification from their peers.

Technology Integration:

These analogies may be typed into a blog or forum post, or shared as an answer to a Google Classroom question if the teacher desires.  They may then be saved and referred to at a later date.
