Exit Cards

Summary:

The teachers has the students fill out some form of exit ticket before leaving for the day.  These are generally used for quick, informal, checks for understanding.

More Information:

Example:

The teacher might have the students summarize what they had learned during that lesson, answer a few questions, and/or have the students write down what is confusing about the topic.

Ways to Provide and Use Feedback:

Teachers could write comments on the exit tickets and pass them back for the kids to review.  The teacher could also use the exit tickets to identify if there is a need for re-teaching or if there are different groups of students that could use some extra practice.

Students could pass their exit cards to another student and give them a chance to clarify any confusion with the topic.  The students need to be able to see their exit ticket again at some point if the teacher wants the students to see the benefits of their reflection.

Data Analysis:

Exit tickets are usually used by the teacher to direct further instruction.  There may be a score/grade if they are given as a sort of "quiz".

Opportunities for Student Metacognition:

The ticket itself can a be a form of self-assessment if the teacher asks the student to reflect on what they do and do not understand.

Technology Integration:

Traditional exit tickets do not require technology.  A teacher could digitize these activities if they wanted through use of Moodle, Google Classroom, or a possibly a different approved program.
