Whiteboard Practice

Summary:

Used as an activity that gets students working with the content during a lesson.  Gives the teacher a quick snapshot to see if the kids are understanding the topics being covered.

More Information:

Example:

As the teacher is going through a lesson they incorporate practice questions.  The class works on the practice questions for a short period of time, and the teacher can walk around and check for understanding in the student work.  The teacher could identify the need for a class discussion to enhance the understanding of the class, or simply move on if it seems like the class is ready for more content.

Ways to Provide and Use Feedback:

Teachers can walk around the room while the whiteboard practice is being done.  The teacher could provide feedback while the kids are working, or wait until after the work time is finished to facilitate a class discussion.

Students could work together on their whiteboard practice, or trade their responses to facilitate small group discussions prior to the teacher bringing the class together as a whole.

Data Analysis:

This type of activity is normally used by the teacher to help identify there is a need for re-teaching or if the class is ready to move on.

Opportunities for Student Metacognition:

The students are able to ask questions for clarification during their practice time.

Technology Integration:

No tech required, but a teacher could substitute a digital workspace rather than a traditional whiteboard.
