  1. SS25 Z1 Chemistry - Johnson
  2. Chapter 4 - Atom theory
  3. Learning objectives & resources for: Atom theory

Learning objectives & resources for: Atom theory

Completion requirements

Students will be able to:

1)  Identify the contributions of multiple scientists to the understanding of the parts of the atom, including (where appropriate) what experiment was used to obtain that knowledge.  The Crash Course Chemistry video on this is here.  A comprehensive video of science in general by Crash Course Chemistry is here.

2)  Calculate the number of protons, electrons, and neutrons of any atom when given select information about the atom's components.  Crash Course Chemistry video on this is here.

3)  Understand what isotopes are and how they influence the average atomic mass of an element.

4)  Calculate the average atomic mass of an element, given the isotopes of that element.

5)  Identify the basic trends that are communicated through the periodic table of the elements.  Crash Course Chemistry video on period table arrangement is here.

Click here for a tutorial on basic trends communicated through the periodic table or here for a tutorial on how to calculate the number of neutrons as well as how to find an element's average atomic mass when give a relative abundance of isotopes.
