Learning objectives & resources for: Solutions

Completion requirements

In this unit, students will be able to:

1) Calculate molarity of a solution.

2) Calculate molality of a solution.

3) Determine and describe the technique for performing a dilution from a stock solution of a known concentration.

4) Determine the solubility of a gas within a solution using the solubility:pressure ratio S1/P1 = S2/P2.

5) Calculate a mole fraction of a solution.

6) Calculate a mass percent of a solution.

7) Determine the boiling and/or freezing point of a solution when given an amount of solute and volume of solvent (or perform derivatives of the values when given boiling and/or freezing points).

NOTE:  For a video tutorial of performing the above skills, click on the appropriate file in the tutorial folder below or click here for a tutorial on each solution calculation or here for freezing/boiling point calculations.  The Crash Course Chemistry video tutorial on these is here.
