Learning objectives & resources for: Chemical names and formulas
Students will be able to:
1) Differentiate between cations and anions.
2) Determine the charge of an element's ion.
3) Differentiate between ionic compounds (formula units) and molecular compounds (molecules).
4) Properly combine two ions to determine a binary compound's chemical formula.
5) Provide the proper name for a given binary compound, utilizing special naming rules for molecular compounds, binary acids, and elements requiring Roman numerals.
6) Identify polyatomic ions by name and chemical formula (including charge).
7) Combine ions together to form a ternary compound.
8) Provide the proper name for a polyatomic compound, utilizing special naming rules for elements requiring Roman numerals.
9) Write the chemical formula for molecular compounds when named using prefixes to reflect number rather than to indicate charge of ions.
10) Write the chemical formulae for binary and ternary acids.
11) Name binary and ternary acids when provided with their chemical formulae. The Crash Course Chemistry video on this is here. A comprehensive naming video by Crash Course Chemistry is here.
