Learning objectives & resources for: Bonding and periodicity
In this unit, students will be able to:
1) Define and identify periodic trends from the periodic table. The Crash Course Chemistry video on this is here.
a) Atomic size/radius
b) First ionization energy
c) Ionic size/radius - cation and anion
d) Electronegativity/Electron affinity
2) Determine the strength of a chemical bond between two ions.
3) Determine the characteristics of the electrons involved in a chemical bond based on electronegativity values.
4) Identify physical traits of compounds formed by covalent and ionic bonds.
5) Identify whether a bond is covalent or ionic based solely on a electronegativity data for the respective ions.
6) Identify the bond axis, bond angle, and bond length of a covalent molecule.
7) Differentiate between values of a Van der Waals radius and a covalent radius.
8) Compare and contrast ionic radii (both cation and anion) to a stable atom.
9) Determine the covalent radius when provided with internuclear distance information.
