Standard 1: Student demonstrates competency in a variety of motor skills and movement patterns.

Outcome Expectations:

By the end of Grade 5, the learner will demonstrate competence in fundamental motor skills and selected combinations of skills; use basic movement concepts in dance, gymnastics and small-sided practice tasks; identify basic health-related fitness concepts; exhibit acceptance of self and others in physical activities; and identify the benefits of physically active lifestyle.

PED-04.S1.14a - Throws overhand using a mature pattern in a nondynamic environments (closed skills).

Overhand Throwing Checklist

  1. Side to target in preparation for throwing action
  2. Arm back and extended and elbow at shoulder height or slightly above in preparation for action; elbow leads
  3. Step with opposite foot as throwing arm moves forward
  4. Hip and spine rotate as throwing action is executed
  5. Follow through toward target and across body

4th Grade (PED) Physical Education Outcome

Standard 1: Demonstrates competency in a variety of motor skills and movement patterns.

PED-04.S1.16 - Catches a thrown ball above the head, at chest or waist level, and below the waist using a mature pattern in a nondynamic environment (closed skills).

Catching Checklist

  1. Extend arms outward to reach for ball (Thumbs in for catch above waist/Thumbs out for catch at or below waist)
  2. Watch the ball all the way into the hands
  3. Catch with hands only; no cradling against the body
  4. Pull the ball into the body as the catch is made
  5. Curl the body slightly around the ball

Assessment Components

  • Cardio Respiratory Endurance:It is also known as aerobic fitness.  It involves performing exercise at a moderate level of intensity for an extended period. We do the Mile Run and Pacer assessments when fitness testing in PE.
  • Muscular Strength: is defined as the maximum amount of force that a muscle can exert against some form of resistance in a single effort. We do the Push Up and Pull Up assessments when fitness testing in PE.
  • Muscular Endurance: is the ability of a muscle or group of muscles to repeatedly exert force against resistance. Performing multiple repetitions of an exercise is a form of muscular endurance. We do the Curl Ups and Flexed Arm Hang  assessments when fitness testing in PE.
  • Flexibility: refers to the absolute range of movement in a joint or series of joints, and length in muscles that cross the joints to induce a bending movement or motion. We do the Sit & Reach assessment when fitness testing in PE.
  • Body Composition: refers to the proportion of fat and fat-free (bone, water, muscle) mass in the body. We measure height and weight when fitness testing in PE
