BPS District Mathematics Standards Book

K-8 Grade Levels

Grade 06

6th grade logoThe 6th grade math BPS-prioritized standards were selected to equip for your child's mathematical understanding at the secondary level!

Your child will become a master of rational numbers, comparing them on a number line and using them in real-world situations.  Adding and subtracting fractions and decimals, even to the hundredths place, will be a breeze.  Multiplication and division of these numbers won't hold them back either – they'll solve problems using visual models and apply their skills to authentic scenarios.
Numbers become more interesting as they explore greatest common factors and least common multiples, working together to find the building blocks of numbers.  The world around them transforms into ratios and percents!  Your child will calculate unit rates, solve percent problems, and even use ratios to find missing parts in real-world situations.
Algebra steps onto the scene!  They'll explore expressions with variables, both numeric and algebraic, and write them to represent real-life problems.  Solving equations becomes a superpower as they tackle problems involving addition, subtraction, and multiplication with variables.
Geometry takes on new dimensions as they explore the areas of triangles and quadrilaterals, even breaking them down into simpler shapes to find the answer.  3D shapes join the party – your child will delve into the concept of volume and apply formulas to find the volume of rectangular prisms, no matter the size!
The coordinate plane becomes their playground as they explore all four quadrants, identifying points using ordered pairs of numbers.  Data analysis skills become sharp as they calculate measures of center (like mean and median) and variability (like range) to understand data sets.  They'll create graphs and histograms to represent this data, becoming detectives of patterns and trends!
This exciting 6th grade math program will equip your child with the problem-solving and critical thinking skills they need to succeed in future math endeavors!
