ELA-04 Targeted Standards
(SL) Strand: Speaking and Listening
Cluster: Comprehension and Collaboration.

ELA-04.SL.01    Engage effectively in a range of collaborative discussions (one-on-one, in groups, and teacher-led) with diverse partners on grade 4 topics and texts, building on others’ ideas and expressing their own clearly. 

a. Come to discussions prepared, having read or studied the required material, explicitly draw on that preparation and other information known about the topic to explore ideas under discussion.

b. Follow agreed-upon rules for discussions.

c. Pose and respond to specific questions by making comments that contribute to the discussion and elaborate on the remarks of others.

d.  Review the key ideas expressed and draw conclusions in light of information and knowledge gained from discussions.

“The Standard.” Student is able to: 

  • Always comes to discussions prepared, having read or studied the required material, and draws on that preparation to explore the topic under discussion
  • Follows the agree-upon discussion rules
  • Asks questions to check information presented
  • The questions are always on topic
  • Questions link to the comments and remarks of others
  • Explains the key details or their own idea and understanding in light of the discussion
Students will participate in a variety of whole group and small group discussions and activities where they will be able to show their proficiency towards the speaking and listening standards.
  2.5 No major errors or emissions regarding 2.0 content and partial knowledge of the 3.0 content.
2.0

The student: 

  • Sometimes comes to discussions prepared, and is able to draw on the material that was read or researched
  • Sometimes follows the afreed-upon discussion rules, but needs prompting
  • Asks questions that are on the topic presented
  • Explains some of the key details and own ideas so that others can understand their thinking

  1.5 In addition to 1.0 content,student has partial knowledge of the 2.0 content.
1.0

The student: 

  • Seldom comes to discussions prepared, and is able to draw on the material that was read or researched
  • Seldom follows the afreed-upon discussion rules, but needs prompting
  • Asks questions, but the questions are not on the topic presented
  • Does not elaborate on key details or own thinking so that others can understand, or becomes easily frustrated when asked questions

  0.5 Limited or no understanding of the skill is demonstrated.
