Performance Expectations

Under Development: Disciplinary Core Ideas are larger groups of related Performance Expectations. So the Disciplinary Core Idea Score is a calculation of all the related Performance Expectations. So click on the Performance Expectation name below each Disciplinary Core Idea to access the learning targets and proficiency scales for each Disciplinary Core Idea's related Performance Expectations.

SCI-MS.ETS1.01

MS (SCI) Engineering Design
Engineering Design [ETS1]

SCI-MS.ETS1.01 Define the criteria and constraints of a design problem with sufficient precision to ensure a successful solution, taking into account relevant scientific principles and potential impacts on people and the natural environment that may limit possible solutions.

Clarification Statement This standard may be integrated into any performance standard. Suggested ecological topics may include deforestation, overpopulation, water quality, air quality, erosion, toxic spills.
The more precisely a design task’s criteria and constraints can be defined, the more likely it is that the designed solution will be successful. Specification of constraints includes consideration of scientific principles and other relevant knowledge that are likely to limit possible solutions.

SCI-MS.ETS1.02

MS (SCI) Engineering Design
Engineering Design [ETS1]

SCI-MS.ETS1.02 Evaluate competing design solutions using systematic process to determine how well they meet the criteria and constraints of the problem.

Clarification Statement This standard may be integrated into any performance standard. This is a continuation of the previous standard..
There are systematic processes for evaluating solutions with respect to how well they meet the criteria and constraints of a problem.

SCI-MS.ETS1.03

MS (SCI) Engineering Design
Engineering Design [ETS1]

SCI-MS.ETS1.03 Analyze data from tests to determine similarities and differences among several design solutions to identify the best characteristics of each that can be combined into a new solution to better meet the criteria for success.

Clarification Statement This standard may be integrated into any performance standard. This is a continuation of the previous standard.
Human activities have significantly altered the biosphere, sometimes damaging or destroying natural habitats and causing the extinction of other species. But changes to Earth’s environments can have different impacts for different living things. Typically, as human populations and per-capita consumption of natural resources increase, so do the negative impacts on Earth unless the activities and technologies involved are engineered otherwise.

SCI-MS.ETS1.04

MS (SCI) Engineering Design
Engineering Design [ETS1]

SCI-MS.ETS1.04 Develop a model to generate data for iterative testing and modification of a proposed object, tool, or process such that an optimal design can be achieved.

Clarification Statement This standard may be integrated into any performance standard. This is a continuation of the previous standard.
- A solution needs to be tested, and then modified on the basis of the test results, in order to improve it. Models of all kinds are important for testing solutions.
- The iterative process of testing the most promising solutions and modifying what is proposed on the basis of the test results leads to greater refinement and ultimately to an optimal solution.
