Narrative

Students believe in and activate their own potential, build relationships, persist through obstacles, and exercise their academic, social, emotional, and professional knowledge and skills.

Standards

AVI-08.SA.01: Student Empowerment
  • the idea of creating an environment where students want to learn rather than have to learn
  • a process by which students gain more control over their lives
  • develop empowered academic outcomes including competence, self-determination, and a sense that their voice is heard
AVI-08.SA.02: Leadership of Others
  • process of enlisting and guiding student talents and energies toward achieving common educational goals

Framework (SA) Student Agency 

AVI-08.SA.01: Student Empowerment is where students gain the authority and agency to make decisions on their own and implement their changes in school. Student empowerment generally includes learning, teaching and leadership in the classroom. Empowerment happens through student authorization and action upon gaining a sense of power.

Sub-Standards:

(a) Explore and pursue leadership opportunities in extracurricular and community service activities within the school and local and/or global community
(b) Evaluate the impact of decisions on the world
(c) Effectively manage stress and anxiety levels, including areas such as test preparation and test taking
(d) Create a systematic decision-making model for personal financial decisions and circumstances
(e) Maintain a strong support network for academic and career success
(f) Identify mentors to influence, support, and guide future transitions and success
(g) Apply strategies to support motivation, especially when lacking intrinsic motivation
(h) Strengthen ability to self-advocate related to areas of need
(i) Leverage support network to assist with areas of need
(j) Reflect on current status and skills to strengthen mental flexibility now and in the future
(k) Recognize and overcome obstacles that could hinder future success
(l) Apply self-awareness strategies and skills with a variety of academic challenges
(m) Employ key learning points in real-world applications

Students who are empowered can:

  • build an ability to solve problems
  • research information and communicate that information and their interests
  • engage with issues occurring around them

Framework (SA) Student Agency 

AVI-08.SP.02: Leadership of Others means students take active roles in their education and develop positive skills in the process. The goal of inspiring student leaders is to create a culture of ownership, collaboration and community in the classroom.

Sub-Standards:

(a) Assess personal traits connected to integrity and ethical leadership
(b) Pursue leadership and/or mentorship opportunities in the school and community
(c) Reflect on conflict situations to strengthen ability to deal with the emotions that accompany conflict in leadership roles.

Student who lead others can:

  • take on the responsibility of spreading knowledge through inspiration and tutoring
  • communicate openly with their team, teachers and others around them effectively
  • become resilient in the face of adversity
  • go out of their way to serve others
